Family Promise

Family Promise of Genesee County helps keep families (who would otherwise be homeless) together as they work to find a home. Traditional shelters often require men and older male children to separate from mothers and small children. Family Promise provides safe environments where care is provided for the whole family as a unit. We do this through a network of “host” and “support” organizations that provide meals and a weekly place to stay overnight. Since the beginning of the program in 2013, Holy Spirit has been a host church, which mean about once a quarter, we host up to 4 families at the church—each in their own room.

Volunteers provide breakfast and lunch items (to go) and dinner to the families with the help of our support organization, Grumlaw Church. In addition, each night, 2 volunteers stay at HSLC to provide support for the families. Ways to volunteer include dropping off food items, helping with set up or tear down of the rooms, serving dinner to the families, or spending a few hours one evening or weekend with the guest families.
